Houston, we have a problem!

By: Simon Jakowicz on 16th Oct 2013

Once out of voodoo capital we headed toward Houston, where Nasa have one of their many space centers. This was our first stop, we got to see a bunch of shows and presentations about what is being done in space to aid advancements in medical, bio chemistry and more on earth. We also got to see what Nasa's latest Mars mission "curiosity" does on a daily basis, how it tests for life and how it repairs itself when damaged. Pretty cool stuff, pretty sure that wasn't programmed in PHP! We got to see loads of artefacts, one thing I found amazing was how a small piece of plastic completely obliterated a massive solid block of aluminium due to the plastic travelling at 15,000+ mph, check the pictures. We played around with the moon buggies which are there for the kids but oh well, I then went down the slide in the angry birds space area.... big kid.

After going to the space center we met up a guy called Kevin who we met on Couchsurfing, he and his family hosted us for two nights. They live in a lovely neighbourhood 30 miles west of Houston. Kevin is definitely the most avid fan of Couchsurfing we have met so far, he introduced us to Lightfoot postage which is a postage system where travellers deliver each others letters to their friends who they have met along the way. It's a good way to meet people who other people have stayed with etc. We spent the evening playing pool and table tennis in their games room, it was wicked fun, a big thanks to Kevin and his family for making us feel so at home. I'm so glad we decided to give Couchsurfing a go, it has been awesome so far, I don't have a bad thing to say from any of our 4 surfing experiences so far. We have met loads of cool people, I never want to stay in a dingy motel again.

The next day was exceptionally hot, hitting 33°C, not bad for mid October. We drove to a water park called Splash Town to find it was closed :@ such a shame as it looked epic. We went back to Kevins and watched the 2nd half of the England game then went and got some nosh. We spent the rest of the day chilling out, playing table tennis, texas holdem and spending time with the family. I also created a London banner with a union jack background for Kevin to put on his wall, this is something lots of other people he has hosted have done. I was pretty happy with the final product, check the pictures again.

Our next stop is San Antonio TX, we arn't really sure what we are going to do here, as the six flags and sea world parks are closed :( Lets wait and see.
